The Cabbage Soup Diet: A 7 Day Temp Weight Loss Plan

The cabbage soup diet has been released under several other names and is a temporary fad weight loss plan that calls for a dieter to follow the plan for one week, take two weeks off, and then follow the diet plan again for a week and so on and so forth until the desired weight is lost.  This seems to be one of the favorites among the “refuse to die” Internet weight loss fads.  This particular one week plan has also been found under the name “Mayo Clinic Diet” or “Sacred Heart Diet,” however it’s important to note that neither one of these institutions is associated with this diet plan.  In fact, both have released statements to the effect that they should not be tied to this weight loss plan and they do not endorse it.  Since no one knows the true source of this fad diet plan, the best guess is that someone trying to add validity to this plan made up those additional names to try and leach off the reputation of the Mayo Clinic or Sacred Heart Hospital.

The seven day plan is one that seems to emphasize cycling different foods.  The most accurate description of the plan is the cabbage soup diet because the basis of the plan is that the low calorie and heavy vegetable laden cabbage soup can be eaten as often as you want every single day of your weight loss plan.  This makes the cabbage soup the basis of the diet every day since you can have as much as you want whenever you want.  That is the main jumping off point for the eating plan, and is the only food that is available to dieters every single day of the week.

In summary form, the rest of the diet goes as follows:

Day 1: Fruit day.  Along with the cabbage soup you can have all the fruit you want except bananas and water, tea, and unsweetened cranberry juice to drink.

Day 2: Veggie day.  All the veggies you want with the exception of corn, beans, and peas.  At dinner you can have a large baked potato with butter.

Day 3: Fruit & Veggies.  Mix day one and two, having all the fruits and veggies you want but no potato.  Same restrictions also apply as with the first two days.

Day 4: Bananas & skim milk.  This day is only soup (of course always with water and unsweetened tea) but you are also allowed up to 8 bananas for the day as well as having as much skim milk as you want for this day and only this day.

Day 5: Beef & tomato day.  On this day you can have up to 20 oz of beef throughout the day as well as up to six fresh tomatoes.  The diet specifically asks you to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water this day, in case you had been drinking cranberry juice and tea but no water.   Obviously as with the other days you can have as much soup as you want.

Day 6: Beef & veggies.  As much beef and veggies as you want, emphasis on green veggies.  You need to eat at least one bowl of soup this day.

Day 7: Variety.  This day you are allowed as many veggies as you want, as much unsweetened fruit juice to drink as you want, and as much brown rice as you want.  Once again eat at least one serving of the soup.

That’s the eating plan for the cabbage soup diet, which also does not recommend strenuous exercise during this time, but simply following the meal plan closely to get your full results.  While many argue over whether or not this is a good long term plan, the one week on and two weeks off schedule has helped some people eat better and lose weight over time.
